About the Cheater

Caitlin Nolan is your resident cheater, sharing insights from professionals she comes across and other tidbits of interesting information that may just help take that first step in finding the coveted entry level communications position.

Caitlin’s background:

Caitlin is a Marist alumna where she received my B.A. in Communication with a concentration in Journalism and minor in History. Caitlin served as managing editor of the Marist College student-run newspaper, The Circle, where she has progressed along the promotional ladder, having previously served as web editor, assistant opinion editor and staff writer.

Caitlin was involved in an internship with The New York Observer. She was responsible for reporting on various events and writing for the website, Observer.com. She also worked with editors and staff writers on reporting and fact-checking stories (both for the paper and online), doing party and event coverage, and compiling research for larger pieces. Caitlin was published in the May 2, 2011 edition of the paper with a story on the premiere and after-party of Sun City Picture House, a documentary of the building of the first movie theater in Haiti since the earthquake of 2010.

This fall, Caitlin participated in a project internship with CNBC, working on their special “Meeting of the Minds: The Future of Leadership.” She was responsible for audience placement and panel leader assistance, which entailed ushering panel leaders to designated areas and coordinating with producers to ensure an enjoyable experience for all involved in the panel discussion.

This summer, Caitlin interned with NBC Senior Correspondent Gabe Pressman, helping him with research for his daily blog, memoirs and neighborhood profile pieces featured on NBC New York Nonstop. She made contacts and coordinated interviews, which culminated in a neighborhood profile of the Bronx’s Arthur Avenue.

In the spring of 2010 she studied abroad in London with the Foundation for International Education. While in London, Caitlin participated in internships with CityAM, a daily business newspaper in London, and Rollinglobe Media, an online Travel Magazine, which focuses on study abroad culture.

In the fall of 2009 Caitlin interned at CNN, specifically CNNMoney.com and was given the chance to cover the midnight opening of the Times Square Toys R’ Us for Black Friday. This entailed interviews, filming, editing and producing a video for the website.

Why The Cheat Sheet?

There is no worse feeling (at least as a college senior) than not knowing what lies ahead, and Caitlin is taking the approach of being as prepared as physically and mentally possible for that scary day in May. No guessing games for this girl– journalism is all about asking questions, so her big one is: tell me how to get hired?
